Good morning..er...afternoon

I ill-advisedly clicked on a youtube link to watch a Marianne Nowottny clip earlier, got The Fear immediately and so had to watch this to regain some semblance of mental balance.
This is one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite artists.
As Jools Holland might say, by way of introduction, "Hapablap habahappahap habbaplapppppp Joanna Newsom blap"

There was blood

Having spooked the bejesus out of myself by watching Let The Right One In recently, it has taken me a few days to get back to a normal, uneventful, solid night's sleep. Even Amityville II: The Spookening (or something) seemed scary, having subjected my human eyes to a Swedish vampire film with one of the most intense and ominously quiet atmospheres I've ever experienced in a film.
I think it deserves a post of its own to be honest, which I will do soon, but for the moment I will bang up a couple of tracks that helped bring me back down from Planet Creepington.
Both are Damien Shingleton remixes of Jonathan Fisher tracks from his 2006 (I think) album Desiderata. Great chilled out remixes of atmospheric electronica. Head over to Hippocamp to find the rest of this album and a heap of electronica stuff all free and legal.

Come have a smell

Magik Markers release their new album, Balf Quarry, in May on the esteemed Drag City label.
Now, I won't pretend to know a shit load about this duo of Pete Nolan and Elisa Ambrogio but their album and homemade CD-R releases are well into the double figures at this stage, they've played with Sonic Youth and, as Tim Westwood might say on Twitter (follow him, it's worth it), this shit is box fresh (ahem).
The album plays beautifully into that woozy, bad trip vibe that has gotten under my skin the last while, also breaking into thumping rock-outs every so often.
It sounds, at times, a little like Jefferson Airplane and Sonic Youth fed through a cheap amp with the band having just been subjected to some serious Timothy Leary psychedelic tomfoolery under the guise of 'science'.
The guitars and percussion are interchangeably menacing, chugging, farting, feedbacking and idiosyncratically wahwahing all over the place while singer/guitarist Elisa Ambrogio is well able to keep up with the PJ Harveys and Nick Caves of this seedy, murky world, sporadically chucking in some gloopy electronica effects and piano to complement her vocals.
In spite of the raggedy all-over-the-placeness of Balf Quarry, there is an immediacy to this album which will most likely alienate their fanbase, who are probably now screaming out for a less 'clean' sound than this and an effort more akin to the band's earlier stuff whilst preparing to berate me for only jumping on the Magik Markers train now. Well fuck it, this is great AND they're playing Primavera on the ATP stage. Should be just dandy.

Here's two tracks from the album to have a listen to.

Wow

Animal Collective - My Girls from Rob Chesnutt on Vimeo.

Not much point me posting this here as you probably already saw it on Nialler's blog but it's just too good to not re-post. So many ideas overflowing in this video for Animal Collective's My Girls by Rob Chestnutt - it has a cracking hodge podge of imagery that, off the top of my head, reminds me of Apocalypse Now and Mike Figgis's Timecode. Excellent stuff.

Series of fuzz #13: Mazes and PENS

Listening to the 'friends' of bands you like on myspace can be a tough swamp to navigate but when you are the cap'n of an airboat as canny as I am, it can turn up some mighty fine results with a real tang.
First up are Mazes, UK fuzz-pop with an unknown amount of members. Check the myspace for a quick idea of what they're about and see the track below along with another. Kinda Weezer-ish and thoroughly wonderful.
Second up are PENS, again a UK act, a trio of girls and some really badly recorded songs on their myspace hence I'm really liking them.
I'd venture that the third track on their page was recorded inside a wet mattress with one of the Vivian Girls having sex with a broken amp on top of it. In a vat of honey. Underwater.

Mazes - Bowie Knife

PENS - Networking

Telepathe: The drug of the nation

Wavves gig was great last night, although it made me wish I was 10 years younger and had a fringe/mullet.
Will have a review up on The 'D soon but, for the moment, those beautiful Brooklynite synth sirens, Telepathe, have kindly returned my Q & A so go check that out

Silver Jews split

Thanks to Mr Thrillpier who left a comment over at On The Record regarding this
See Dave Berman's original forum post here
Probably the best 'split up note' I ever did read...

Hello, my friend.
Cassie and I went to the cave and it looks great. 58 degrees but the humidity makes it feel like 72.
I'm just going to play fifteen songs. My fifteen favorite ones.
A dollar per song. Plus Arnett Hollow. I don't
want to keep you underground for too long. Fall Creek Falls State Park State Lodge is great by the way.
Yes I cancelled the South American shows. I'll have to see the ABC Countries another way.
I guess I am moving over to another category. Screenwriting or Muckraking.
I've got to move on. Can't be like all the careerists doncha know.
I'm forty two and I know what to do.
I'm a writer, see?
Cassie is taking it the hardest. She's a fan and a player but she sees how happy i am with the decision.
I always said we would stop before we got bad. If I continue to record I might accidentally write the answer song to Shiny Happy People.
What, you thought I was going to hang on to the bitter end like Marybeth Hamilton?

love david

Ain't that nice?

There will be blaaaaarrrrrrggghhh

This is a picture Graham Sutherland painted of me looking smugly at nothing in particular...well...it might be W. Somerset Maugham...

A quick blast through some stuff I've been listening to the last while - some stuff that made me nostalgic and some stuff that's just great (particularly Grouper and Q-Tip). You decide what's what.
It was meant to be a zip file but something went wrong, i.e. me, so now it's just individual tracks, unfortunately.
I hereby tip Ivan Colon (that should have a Hispanic-sort-of inflection over the second 'O' so he isn't named after a vital body part) to be the Sufjan/Bon Iver grower of 2009 (despite his religious leanings) and reckon he'll probably play a Foggy Notions or Crawdaddy gig that everyone raves about for months at some stage. If this doesn't happen, you ain't seen me , roigh'?

Download here

Here's the tracks, artists and my one word sum-up after the artists name.

What Is Gained - Ivan Colon (luvverly)
Five Minute Dream - Like Honey (shoegazey)
Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie - Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band (harpy)
Fortunate Son - Cat Power (sultry)
Heavy Water, I'd Rather Be Sleeping - Grouper (underwaterbeauty)
Ciccone - Microfilm (groovy)
By Horoscope Light I&II - Doseone (nasaltastic-y)
Resurgam -Alias (jackyerbody)
Corrupt - Dalek (tasty)
Believe - Q-Tip (featuring D'Angelo) (oldschool-y)
Sugar - If I Can't Change Your Mind (solo mix) (nostalgic-y)

Web awards nomination for Drop-D

I'm delighted to say that Drop-D (where I do most of my writing at the moment) has been nominated for an Irish Web Award for Best Music Site. It seems we are on the shortlist and I'm not going to pretend to be 'cool' about this; I love awards and attention so fuck it - come on the D!
I don't know how it works but if there's a voting system, I'm all up for rigging it, Balkan-states-in-the-Eurovision style.
I also pray this guy is there

Bury boys bury Burial

I couldn't resist that headline; it's the sub editor in me.
And I also couldn't be happier that Elbow have won the Mercury.
They're easily one of my favourite bands and Guy Garvey is one of the greatest frontmen around (Jeff Tweedy is up there too) with a witty, warm stage presence and beautifully honest lyricism.
They've had their ups and downs - with various label changes and a lack of commercial success - and until recently haven't been nearly as big as they might be, although they did have One Day Like This featured in the final Big Brother highlights wrap-up bit last week and they've now won a famous prize..
After a gripping, butterflies-in-the-stomach Electric Picnic performance, they return to us in October and I cannot wait.
I should be a little more reserved about them, maybe, given my girlfriend's open love for Mr Garvey (I received this message from her when I said I was blogging about Elbow: 'How sad you'll be when I run away with Guy. Even more so now he's been propelled to megastar status) but when they are this good, I'll just have to live with that threat..

Syriana's script vs. The Script

So now in the middle of Syriana on RTE, I am subjected to an item on The Script recording their new video. Because they have the financial clout of Sony behind them, they warrant a place on the national news as they commit the video for their new heinous aural atrocity to film? As Eddie in Bottom once pointed out, I would rather have a pineapple inserted violently into my rectum.
What a load of cock. Yes, they are easy targets and slagging them off is as obvious as saying 'red bull coke tastes like metal vomit' or 'the tyrannosaurus rex had small arms' but why does this need to be on the news; even as a late night 'squirrel in a miniature speedboat' moment?
And in the middle of Syriana too? Clooney's finest moment and a wonderful film that demands a second and third viewing. A film that never panders to the viewer, never spells things out and has Matt Damon explain, in one succinct delivery, the reason why war happens in the Middle East. Brilliant stuff.
In other news - and news that by now is old and boring - State mag is going free from next month. The blog buzz around this today has been interesting as people banged on about, among other things, journos at State having to take a possible paycut. Poor them. I work a day job for wages and do my Drop-d/Connected/and soon Analogue work for nada but the love and respeck, so I'm afraid I don't have sympathy for any paycuts.
Yes, yes that's bitterness, of course.
I dream of the day that hard cash is included as one of my motivations for doing all that writing.
Hard cash and love: two wonderful components vying for top spot...some day.
Actually Film Ireland pay me (God bless the movies) so there is a positive.

Back and alive

Stradbally didn't eat me alive and the review should be up on drop-d tomorrow. It was an exhilarating and tiring experience and having to work the Monday morning after 1 hour of sleep was not pretty. Hope you enjoyed it too, if you were there.
There's plenty I've left out of the review, I'm sure, but I hope it gives a good feel for the weekend. Incidentally, there was some arsehole in the press tent moaning about the quality of the pint-pulling at about 11.30pm on Friday night - the bars outside closed at 10pm.
There's always one, eh?

Monday, August 25

I'm sorry, humans. We are a horrible blight on a lovely planet

Trying to save every last penny available for next weekend's Electric Picnic means that alot of time has been spent lolling about the house in front of the oversized flatscreen (that actually came with the house?!) like a stroppy teenager, drinking coffee, watching shit television and getting understandably agitated at many many programmes.
I'm sure nobody reads this blog for Big Brother news but it is absolutely necessary to alert you to the fact that life-size, inflatable sleazemonkey, GI Joe Mario came back for an excruciating cameo on Sunday to propose to dead-eyed shark woman Lisa in a stunt that was so irredeemably naff it made watching the closing ceremony of the Olympics - and subsequent handover to London - seem like a wonderfully inclusive spectacle that we should all embrace while wearing United Colours of Benetton cardigans and tickling little playful monkeys on the belly. I'm lying, of course, about the Olympic thing being in any way watchable.
Mario and Lisa make me feel sick. I would rather watch my grandparents copulate loudly in front of me than ever see the two of them on a television screen again. They repel me to my very soul and I think I could probably watch 27 episodes of Grey's Anatomy back-to-back rather than have to see a single photo from their horrendous future nuptials. Jesus Christ.
And as for the Olympic handover. What the fuck? A London red bus bungled into view with a bunch of ethnically balanced dancing Troglodytes whirling about with umbrellas until the top of said vehicle eventually peeled down to reveal the legendary Jimmy Page - now looking like a dulling, badger-like Chinese pensioner - and Leona 'reality TV singing sensation?' Lewis singing one of the greatest Zep songs of all time. Jesus wept. Then David shitting Beckham smiled vacuously at the little Blue Peter competition girl and booted a football into the braying masses, a football which I think one of the Chinese athletes caught and looked like he had just soiled himself with glee.
Who was this aimed at? Is there really a lobotomised collective that watched it and thought 'yes, I am so glad to be a part of this wonderful circle of life, this championing of inclusiveness'? Maybe I'm just a bitter old bollocks and this
really was wonderful but I doubt it.
In other news, I have had interviews recently with both Calexico and Fucked Up that have made me feel glad to be alive and have helped build a little foundation of hope for the future. Joey Burns was a lovely man, full of knowledge and wit and Fucked Up's lead singer, Pink Eyes, proved to be an outgoing, chatty, shockingly honest interviewee. And the punk gig that happened after the interview was the most fun I've had in Whelans in a while.
Thank god for the music.

Nas vs. Fox

No, it's not a remix. This is in reference to this saga currently unfolding in the US. Now, regardless of Nas' quality as a rapper with a penchant for shitty beats in recent times and a flair for opportunistic publicity, going up against Fox - and in particular Bill O'Reilly - must be commended.
O'Reilly is a hateful fucker; everything that is wrong with the narrow-minded, ill-informed, blinkered, knee-jerk reacting Republican side of the US. I get sick of people bitching and moaning in general about Americans, when what they mean is either a) Fat, idiotic, loud American tourists in Ireland or b) the ten or eleven Americans they've met in their lives, five of which were loud and annoying. America has given us some of the greatest, if not the greatest, films, music, television and books the world has ever seen. True they have also given us the most heinous war criminals, covert missions of death, lies, Christian fundamentalism and a host of other horrific shit but I really like Curb Your Enthusiasm so I'll overlook those for the moment.
The Yanks do stand out and it is fine to bitch about them when you see a gaggle of them on the streets, cameras resting on their humungous stomachs, gaping at the spire on O'Connell street like it was the world's biggest piece of good ol' beef jerky and they were hungry as those starving pigs in Hannibal. But these people are not 'all Americans' and the horrifically racist Irish public (that's another post altogether) need to try and remember this in the long term. Anyway, back to O'Reilly. He's a cunt.
It's funny that people like him exist out there. People who I know I disagree with on pretty much everything ever, without even hearing their opinions on most of it. And vice versa. And whatever my opinions on Nas, a talented rapper who has made some mistakes, if he is making a public stand against Fox/O'Reilly in the States, then I am all for it. I would have preferred it to have been Jay-Z, Method Man, Gza or Andre 3000 but anyway, that's just a rap thing.

Gig Hard 2: Gig Harder

For a while it has seemed that gigs in the capital city had taken a break of sorts. There was a time a few months ago (I think it was around the time No Age played Whelans) when there was at least 56 gigs a week for 2 months straight. I tried to blag as many as possible and it worked out well enough but fuck me by the end of it I was more tired than a Guardian reader at a horticultural & organic produce market doing a weekly shop.
And now the gigs are back. Back hard.
Tonight you could go to Ministry (Tripod, supported by the legendary Giveamanakick) or Johann Johannson in Grand Canal's CHQ building.
Tomorrow you should only be going to Analog's Efterklang/Tortoise/Liars triple whammy deluxe, although you also have Silje Nes in Grand Canal Square or Ministry in Tripod to pop along to if you can bear missing an Efterklang show. Monday sees electronic buzz-makers Storkboy Choons at the Byoom Byoom Ryoom.
Tuesday is Jim White in the Suicra Club.
Wednesday is Antics (if you have the chutzpah to brave it, old man/woman) with New Amusement playing.
Thursday is crackers coz it's the fucking Butthole Surfers (I'll be naked at the front) or Dry County if you like (and by 'if you like' I mean 'why are you not at the Buttholes to sing along with Cough Syrup??').
You could then round it all off with a dose of Robotnik (who was great supporting Laura Marling a few weeks ago) who graces Crawdaddy on Friday with his skills.
So there you have it: a gig plan for the week (for those of you in Dublin).
I'm off to grow a moustache and sprinkle fairy dust on my winkle-pickers for the Efterklang gig and then sacrifice some doe-eyed baby animals for the imminent industrial aural molestation of the Buttholes. I'll squeeze everything else in too, if possible.
Enjoy it. And a shout out to Brendan who asked me to mention him in this post.

Guest post #1: Cha (the man with the rant)

Me mate Cha, currently residing in Engerland, had some stuff to get off his chest and i have kindly given him a place to do so in the public domain. The following rant may contain violence and/or sexual swearwords so your children may want to leave the room. Take it away, Dr Hook:

I don’t go to that many gigs but those I do go to tend to be towards the heavier end of the scale and in bigger venues (1000s of people), so my experiences may be particular to this type of situation but I’m sure these archetypes are common, in some form, to other type venues and shows and I’m sure all shows share some version of the sage, chin-stroking, aloof muso.
Having been to a show last night I experienced again the various joys of spending time in close proximity to these folks but last night I encountered a new beast, some godawful cunt who needed a good dig. He and his girlfriend had gotten right to the barrier and so about 4 ft from the stage. He was over 6ft tall but standing on the slight riser in front of the barrier stood about 6ft 5. He wanted to make sure his girlfriend was ok, no harm there, but insisted, physically, that he should have enough space to lean back arms fully extended. That in itself was irritating; as it was, I didn’t reach his armpits height-wise and couldn’t move for the crush and so was trapped. That’s all very normal but the killer was his insistence on dancing in the manner he did. Pogoing was fine but this lad ‘needed’ to swing his hips from side to side and front to back in such a violently thrusting manner that it looked to all that he was trying to dry-ride his girlfriend over the final hurdle and over the finish line somewhere around the drum kit. My nipples were effectively getting a very unwelcome and belligerent lap dance.
Now, I see barrier as a privileged position and saw this as a cake and eat it situation. If you want to mosh, join the pit. If you’re in a desperate crush, stop being a cunt and have a bit of consideration. And whatever you do, do not try to impose yourself physically and loom aggressively over my girlfriend when she, with her elbow, prevents herself being hit in the face with your shoulder for the second time. Trying to intimidate her will only get your ankles hacked and heels stamped on (by her), and your ‘I’m looking for Garland’s beach’ ¾ length cotton pants and flip flops won’t offer much protection.
But that situation did offer an opportunity to engage with a quite common, benign and amiable gig fixture, the fellow punter with whom you can share a shrug and a mouthed ‘what the fuck’ or ‘twat’ when encountering the likes of hipshaker guy.
Further to that there were a couple of the other regulars in attendance; most a pain, some quietly satisfying.
Firstly, the teenager: the one aching for the classic heckler putdown ‘I remember my first beer too’ (or spliff or pill or whatever). You know the type: determined to elbow spines, kick legs and spill beers and that’s before the music even starts. They often segue into the type who needs to talk to their mates about what’s happening right now on stage lest you be able to actually hear for yourself. This vision appeared last night in his best shirt, Corey Haim spikes and single earring, sporting dinner plate pupils and a drunken stagger.
Then there’s the ‘sweet’ couple (she standing in front of him with his arms wrapped around her), intent on reminding each other that this (every) song is their song and they need to lean far apart to be able to see each other without breaking the love grip and then chew each other’s faces off in that teenage fashion.
The people with the rucksack - what the fuck? A while back I stood in front of people who came to the show with a suitcase, a fucking suitcase. It was on the floor placed perfectly so that if I swayed backwards in the slightest its edge got me in that point at the back of the knees that made your legs immediately buckle. Cunts.
Cameras and camera phones. I’m going to write a conference paper about this at some point, Sontag and Benjamin will be invoked, but this one does for some have a pro as well as a con. For shorter people (like me) there is the opportunity to use others’ digital cameras as a kind of periscope. But why do people insist on leaning callously across others’ faces, repeatedly, elbow in their face, to get a shot; especially when it’s a blurry, unidentifiable mess? (I know the answer to this, and it’s profane).
On the other side, aside from the amiable fellow punter, the only stalwart of merit that comes to mind right now is that perennial metal fan. These bastions of metal sense turn up in their sleeveless black t shirts and metal tattoos. One part benign sentinel one part ghost dog thing (Sigourney Weaver in Ghostbusters not Forrest Whitaker) they dispense pit justice, look after cute rock chicks and stand arms crossed seemingly unmoved by any of it. (note: typically this is at a show somewhere lower on the aggression/noise level than Slayer or the ilk, as when that’s part of the equation all bets are off).
My first, and most impressive, opportunity to witness this phenomenon was years ago at a gig in France. The venue was half full and some ‘my first beer’ was taking the opportunity offered by all the space to run 30 feet or so and jump knees and elbows up into the backs of the row of people at the back (This was before the band had started too). On his fourth or fifth sortie he passed close to two metalheads: mullets, sleeveless Slayer/Metallica shirts and Sepultura and assorted generic metal tattoos. Without turning his head the guy closest to him, at the perfect moment, threw his arm out and caught him with an immaculate clothes line. The kid’s head stopped but legs kept going, upwards. It was a perfect Brad Pitt in Snatch, hanging horizontally for a split second, lay him out connection. Mullet man resumed his conversation with his friend seemingly oblivious to the damage he had so righteously wrought.
So that’s a few of the ‘types’. I know there are plenty more, both completely different specimens and hybrids of the above. Off the top of my head there’s the I-indicate –I-want-to-get-past-you-but-then-decide-to-stop-in-front-of-you prick, far worse for those of us of short stature; actually come to think of it most people of a taller disposition (say 5ft10 ½ plus), are unwittingly annoying for me by virtue of their innate view of the stage blocking ability. Not to mention the talk-through-the-quieter-parts-or-actually-take/make-a-call people.

Evolution: the proof is on the buses

I used to have the unbridled joy of getting a nice bus to work in the mornings. It was a delightful journey, passing up George's Street, through Camden Street, Terenure, Templeogue and the leafy 'burbs. On a sunny day the birds would flock to the window and nuzzle up against them, poking chewy toffees through the window for the smiling passengers to nibble on. The driver would pat me gently on the behind as I swooshed past him to take my seat.
I no longer get that bus.
Thanks to moving house (admittedly my meals have improved considerably since I moved in with my expert chef girlfriend Sinead) I now must ride a darker beastie altogether. This is a bus that farts and belches its way through the ominously stinkier parts of Baile Atha Cliath. It's grim grim grim all the way to my destination and often features the kind of Neanderthal, staring primates you are surely all too familiar with. These are the ones who are genetically predisposed to chatting to you if it's just you and them upstairs. Earphones are a 'please talk to me' distress signal. They shift in their seats, looking into everyone's po-faced fisogs, playing tinny techno from their phones and hoping you will say something/anything to them.
Christ it's like school sometimes.
Today I got the gimp in the seat in front who turned fully around, on a packed bus, to eyeball myself and my seat mate. I played the 'looking intently out the window' game expertly. Usually these fiends jump off the bus as quickly as they have jumped on and invariably you see them running nimbly from the bus when they alight - there's always some pressing engagement they've been yapping loudly about on their phones before disembarking.
Anyway, I shouldn't bang on too much. Nothing has happened yet, but I could be just a stare away..
In other news, check out Christopher Hitchens getting waterboarded for a Vanity Fair piece. Disagree as I may with some of Hitchens' political views, the man is a wonderfully intellectual writer with a scary knowledge of history and a formidable constitution for the sauce. I'm reading his 'God is not Great' book at the moment, hence the mention.
In Big Brother news, for a change, the blind guy is a nightmare. Like a creepy Billy Connolly with a lobotomy and disguised as a student from 1992.
Also, do not go see Kung Fu Panda. Peddling a message that obese fantasists can achieve anything they want if they only belieeeeeeeve strong enough? To kids? Blaaaarrrrggggg, give them Spongebob or Fairly Odd Parents over this, anyday of the week. That aside, it just ain't funny or clever in the Toy Story/Monsters Inc kind of way.
And finally, check out the Oxegen previews - and indeed my own preview of the New Band Stage for the weekend - over at drop-d
Sorry for this splurge of a post. I'm sure there's more to mention that I've left out. Here's a bit of Denmark's Trentemoller anyway. Get his Chronicles discs. Nice dab of glitchy, minimal techno.

Seven songs for seven bloggers

The song kinda version of that meme thing from a while back plopped into my lap from the always clued in ctrl/alt/delete
This is the deal:

"List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to."

And here's my selection, which I now realise is quite...em...mellow. The temptation to cherry-pick the 'cool' songs has been avoided.

Missing One - Bonnie Prince Billy (from Lie Down in the Light)
A gorgeous track from a gorgeous album with Oldham's voice in the best shape it's ever been. Try not to sing along when he sings 'But I wouldn't trade my life for someone's millions', I dare you. Melancholic gold.

re:Stacks - Bon Iver (from For Emma, Forever Ago)
The haunting conclusion to one of the finest albums I've ever heard. Lump-in-the-throat delicacy.

Lucky Man - Sun Kil Moon (from April)
Instantly recognisable Sun Kil Moon sound that paints the image of Mark Kozelek onstage, head back, eyes closed, demanding undivided attention. Brilliant song.

Basic Instinct - Quasimoto (from The Unseen)
Madlib's alter ego drawling out a short track that's a nod to tha ol' skool. Just a cool sound to it and the album's great for that sunshine vibe.

Paris - MSTRKRFT (from The Looks)
Banging. If you are not dancing from 2:29 into this song then you are clinically dead and should donate your organs to someone who needs them. Turn it up.

Amberscene - Halves (from Haunt Me When I'm Drowsy)
From their new mini album, this one wears its influences on its sleeve and ends up being very much their own. This lot have something very special going on.

Two-step - Low (from Secret Name)
One of my all-time favourites and one I keep going back to. They played it at their gig in the Village and didn't play it in ALT, apparently. I had to miss the latter gig unfortunately. An amazing song in its simplicity. I listen to it an awful lot.

Download my selection here if you feel like it.And now to make with the tagging:

I see a darkness. I also see an imminent kick in the face for those people who won't shut the fuck up at gigs

Gigs like Bonnie Prince Billy don't pop up that often. There are plenty of bands and musicians peddling their wares around the country week in/week out but someone with the resplendent back catalogue, cultish intrigue and that real 'I will cut my arms off with a semi-blunt knife and force feed them to myself, washed down with a pint of vagrant sweat if I don't see this gig' factor are rare enough. So why is it that arseholes insist on gibbering away to their mates during not just most of the set but particularly during the quietest songs and especially during songs that you find genuinely moving? And why is it that their grating voices are always complemented by their gurning, sweaty, moronofaces? Have you ever turned around to one of these dribbling shitvessels and went 'Oh he/she actually seems quite pleasant and erudite, perhaps I've misjudged them'? No, you haven't, because invariably you are going to be faced with some cuntball in a cowboy hat with a soulpatch and a t-shirt that spells cursewords with numbers (you know the ones: fuck has a 5 for the 'f' and so on)
Typically at last night's gig in Vicar Street there were a few of these Troglodytes parked behind myself and Mrs Therewillbeblog. Why are they there - are complimentary tickets for gigs being bandied around to anyone and everyone these days? Is Bonnie Prince Billy really the kind of gig at which I should expect people to be answering their phones or having a full blown conversation about their pointless lives? The same thing happened at Explosions in the Sky last year. I was positioned in front of four twats, all with the same coloured shirts and haircuts, who whooped 'up ya boy ya' and farted repeatedly during the whole gig. They even engaged in some sort of hoe-down dance when Explosions really got into their stride..
To be honest I expect that kind of crap at big gigs where huge mixed crowds flock and pay high prices for tickets. These kind of gigs have really taken off as social events in the last few years and many people head to them for a day out rather than to appreciate the music. I've been at these kind of gigs and it's fine to a point. They are mostly outdoors and it's easy enough to cope with. But this can't be allowed to filter down to every smaller-venue gig can it? Am I going to go to the next Bon Iver gig and have some bastard's Crazy Frog ringtone shatter the silence as Mr Vernon opens his crushed heart to a mostly hypnotised, adoring audience (or as with last night, some guy announcing that he shaved his penis. Admittedly, that was pretty funny)?
I never want to be that guy who shushes people and of course there will be some sort of chatter at most gigs - no one stays absolutely silent for an hour and a half with a few beverages in them. But if you do go along to a gig that's off the beaten track and is clearly going to attract a large amount of devoted fans who desperately want to hear the songs that have guided them carefully through the traumas and joys of their lives, try and have a little respect and shut the fuck up.

Bloggy Prince Billy

Sorry for yet another bad pun in the title but I'm starting to get into the habit of it now and it's become a personal competition to try and insert the worst imaginable puns/gags into that little title space.
Got the new BPB album and it's great; really growing on me by the day. I've found his music comforting/intriguing/genius over the years and he's one of those artists who instantly chills me out and gives me that feeling of familiarity and, well, happiness I suppose. Even on the the darker tracks. Upcoming gigs are Times New Viking tomorrow night, supported by Giveamanakick, and Bon Iver is not too far away either. Obviously, Bonnie Prince Billy is playing as part of the Future Days festival so that's going to be incroyable.
On a personal note, I've just moved into a deadly little cottage near town with m'ladyfriend and so far it's going brilliantly. Nice to have a bit of space and even a garden-type area thingy. I was egging to play Guitar Hero at our recent house-warming but we couldn't get the bloody thing to work. Anyone know anything about PS3s? Let me know. I was primed to rock out too...
On the plus side, one of our guests was a bit of a headcase and developed a highly amusing drunken miaowing tic that he lapsed into every so often, so that kept me well entertained. In retrospect, he may have been in the midst of some form of mental breakdown but anyway..he's ok now.
See you in Andrews Lane Theatre tomorrow.
